Seismology and Wave Physics

SWP

In our research we make use of state-of-the-art numerical techniques and modern high-performance computing in order to characterise 3D Earth structure and seismic sources.

Major topics in our group involve the construction of a Comprehensive Seismic Earth Model that assimilates seismic data across a wide range of spatio-temporal scales while fully honouring wave propagation physics, the development of a full waveform variant of noise tomography that employs and inverts for realistic noise sources, the compilation of a global noise correlation data set in collaboration with the Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology (ORFEUS), as well as the application of data assimilation techniques to physical models of earthquake cycles. We are further interested in full seismic waveform inversions across all scales and for various regions, e.g. Europe, the western Mediterranean, Japan and the Sea of Marmara.
